I got an email last month from a fellow student in the University of Washington iSchool's Master of Library and Information Science program, recruiting team members to help with an archives-based capstone project. After a phone call, a series of emails, and the addition of two more team members, we finally got to set foot in the alumni room of the Broadway High School, housed at Seattle Central College.
The Broadway High School--Seattle's first dedicated high school--opened in 1902 and educated local young minds for 43 years until its conversion to Edison Technical School in 1946. Its history is inextricably linked to the Great War, the Great Depression, World War II, and Japanese incarceration.
Our goal is to review the materials, review previous preservation and inventory efforts, and to provide an assessment of its condition, and to make recommendations for its preservation, stewardship, and educational outreach opportunities.
