Disaster Preparedness

The contents of an archives are only as safe as the building in which they are kept and a thorough assessment of an archives in the Seattle should include a seismic review. This is why we asked for information about the most recent structural evaluation of the Broadway Performance Hall in which the BHSA resides. We breathed a sign of relief upon reading:

...it would likely perform relatively well in a seismic event.

Phew!


However, since the report was prepared for the purpose of considering building renovations and not for retrofitting an archives-specific space, we are recommending that:

  • Items in the room be protected from potential fire sprinkler activation

  • Wall-hangings be secured with double hooks rather than museum putty

  • Cabinets be latched to keep contents from falling out

  • All items be stored at least 6 inches off the floor in case of water damage from broken pipes
